Resources on Ethics in Society, the Workplace, and in Higher Education

The following organizations provide ethics resource material and readings that may be of interest to the general public, business professionals, members of higher education, bloggers, researchers and others interested in the role of ethics in society.

ASL Group UK promotes efficiency services in business. My Ethics Sage blog was recognized as promoting productivity in the workplace and ethical decision-making.
 
The ACFE is the world's largest anti-fraud organization and premier provider of anti-fraud training and education. Together with more than 80,000 members, the ACFE engages in activities to is reduce business fraud worldwide and inspiring public confidence in the integrity and objectivity within the certified fraud examiners profession. It published the Report to the Nations on Occupational Fraud and Abuse.
 
Gallagher provides a variety of resources on ethics matters including a Business Ethics Blog and Ethical Leader Newsletter.
 

BusinessEthics.ca - A Canadian resource for business ethics, the Center promotes the study of ethical dilemmas, values and decision-making in the world of commerce and is run by business ethics scholar, Chris MacDonald.

Business Ethics: The Magazine of Corporate Responsibility (BSR) -- A global organization that helps member companies achieve success in ways that respect ethical values, people, communities and the environment. BSR provides information, tools, training and advisory services to make corporate social responsibility an integral part of business operations and strategies.

Center for the Study of Ethics in the ProfessionsIllinois State University  – Provides links to university ethics centers and case studies in many professions.

Conscioused - Does blogging and offers courses on the skills and knowledge we mostly need in the workplace and in life that aren’t taught in universities. Skills like effective communication, emotional intelligence, resilience, self-knowledge, money management, and entrepreneurship are addressed.

eben.org (European Business Ethics Network) - Promotes business ethics within European private, public and voluntary sector organizations and includes news, events, discussion forum, membership details and training programs. It also links to many additional ethics resources in Europe.

E-Ethics Center - Provides resources to develop business ethics programs and teaching materials.

An international leader in the exploration of ethics, the Emory Center for Ethics is dedicated to exploring how ethical issues underlie the decisions that shape our minds, lives and society.
 
Emerson Leadership Institute at Saint Louis University. The Institute focuses on leading business practice change through research to identify processes that advance ethical business conduct and principled decision-making.

Ethical Systems.org – This organization looks at the role of leaders to lead on ethics and take responsibility for both good and bad results. Philosophers have been discussing ethical leadership (as in what leaders should do) for quite some time but the topic is relatively new as an area of social scientific study.
 
Jack Marshall is a prolific writer with a unique and sometimes controversial view on a variety of ethics issues. He blogs multiple times each day on hot button issues.

Ethics & Compliance Initiative. Provides an Ethics Toolkit with coverage of organizational ethics and compliance; ethical decision-making strategies; and resources to develop comprehensive ethics training.
 
ERC is the oldest non-profit organization in the U.S. devoted exclusively to the advancement of high ethical standards and practices in public and private institutions. It publishes a variety of resource materials including the National Business Ethics Survey.

Ethikos: The Journal of Practical Business Ethics - Ethikos is a bi-monthly publication that examines changes in corporate ethics from the viewpoint of those involved: compliance officers, ethics officers, ombudspersons, practicing professionals in law, accounting, management, and government. It reports on both the good and bad in business ethics and the compliance realm.

Ethisphere – Ethisphere offers a variety of resources including The Business Ethics Leadership Alliance. The Institute is a leading international think-tank dedicated to the creation, advancement and sharing of best practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anti-corruption and sustainability. It also selects the World’s Most Ethical Companies® on an annual basis, a distinction that honors superior achievements in transparency, integrity, ethics and compliance.

Giving Voice to Values (Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia) – Giving Voice to Values (GVV) is an innovative approach to values-driven leadership development in business education and the workplace. Rather than a focus on ethical analysis, the GVV curriculum focuses on ethical implementation and asks the questions: “What if I were going to act on my values? What would I say and do? How could I be most effective?" Free resources to ethics educators.

Inside Higher Ed – News and views about all things related to higher education including academic freedom, student responsibilities and faculty leadership.
 
In conjunction with the Council for Industry in Higher Education, the IBE publishes "Ethics Matters: Managing Ethical Issues in Higher Education."
 

Institute for Global Ethics Provides training and consulting services to groups, which are asked to consider why ethics matters, explore shared values, understand the role of values in decision-making, assess the moral courage needed to act, and contemplate how all of these component parts impact the culture of an organization.

International Center for Academic Integrity - The International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI) addresses issues such as cheating, plagiarism, and academic dishonesty in higher education. ICAI offers assessment services, resources, and consultations on academic integrity and holds an annual conference.

Josephson Institute of Ethics - The Center is devoted to increasing the ethical commitment, competence, and practice in all segments of society. It does this through training and consulting to help companies improve their workplace cultures and is supported by a comprehensive program devoted to improving ethics in society.

Moral Philosophy: Ethics Unwrapped (University of Texas at Austin) – Provides excellent teaching materials for ethics instruction including cases and videos.

Olsson Center for Applied Ethics at the University of Virginia - An international leader in the field of business ethics, the Olsson Center serves as a critical resource for executives, scholars, students and Darden alumni who are faced with the challenges of integrating ethical thinking into business decision-making. It shares research, publications and videos. 

Pilant's Business Ethics Blogs - James Pilant posts ethics blogs from thought leaders through his community of ethics writers.

Re: The Auditors – Francine McKenna blogs about critical issues facing the accounting profession.

Society for Business Ethics  - The Society is an international organization of scholars and others interested in business ethics that provides a forum for those interested in research, teaching, or the practical application of ethical principles and concepts to the management of businesses.  

Tom Selling, formerly an Academic Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant of the SEC, blogs about a variety of accounting and financial reporting issues including regulation and ethics.
 
Writings about leadership values and workplace ethics.

The Business Ethics Blog -  Chris MacDonald, Director of the Jim Pattison Ethical Leadership Education & Research Program at the University of Toronto, blogs about corporate ethics issues. 

The Carol and Lawrence Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania - The Center sponsors and disseminates leading edge research on critical topics in business ethics by providing students, educators, business leaders, and policy makers with research to meet the ethical, governance, and compliance challenges that arise in complex business transactions. 

The Center for Public Integrity – Writings on all things related to political ethics.
 
Provides industry resources for compliance and ethics issues. Houses the journal Ethikos and The Journal of Practical Business Ethics.
 
Business ethics speaker and FORTUNE contributor Bruce Weinstein shares his views about ethics, character, and leadership. Videos of interviews are available.

The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University - The Center provides cases, curricula, videos, and courses that have been successfully used in the classroom and by organizations. It also offers writings on ethical issues, CSR, and sustainability by leaders in their fields.
 
Gael O'Brien blogs on personal ethics, leadership, workplace ethics and life in general. She is a columnist for Business Ethics Magazine and publisher of The Week in Ethics.

Transparency International – This organization is devoted to fighting corruption of all kinds around the world. It provides research and publication about corruption.

W. Michael Hoffman Center for Business Ethics at Bentley University - CBE is guided by its mission to promote integrity and trust in business by encouraging the establishment of ethical cultures in businesses everywhere. The Center pursues this through the application of expertise, research, education and a collaborative approach to the dissemination of best practices.
